Many people suffer from sleep apnea, but what they may not realize is—their dental provider can help with general dentistry. At Basin Dentistry, your overall health and well-being is extremely important to us.
What is Sleep Apnea?
We want all of our patients to experience both good overall and oral health. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that interrupts your breathing while you sleep. It can even be life-threatening. Snoring is a common side effect of sleep apnea, but is not always evident.
There are two common types of sleep apnea; obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can affect anyone regardless of age, but there are significant factors that make you more susceptible to this disorder. According to the American Dental Association those factors include:
- Being over 40
- Being overweight
- Having large tonsils, large tongue or small jaw
- Family history of sleep apnea
- Nasal obstruction from a deviated septum, allergies or sinus issues
Sleep Apnea Treatment
The ADA states that if left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to an array of serious health issues. High blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, diabetes, depression and even worsening of ADHD symptoms can all be serious issues. One treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a custom fit oral sleep appliance that helps to lift the jaw to the correct position, alleviating snoring, teeth grinding and sleep apnea symptoms. However, a more serious sleep apnea diagnosis may require other treatment. Visiting with the experienced team at Basin Dentistry can help you find solutions today.

Great staff, they make you feel very comfortable and informed. Also, I’ve never had to wait more than a few minutes after I arrive.
